Quick dash to Italy.

Just about 20 mins west of Monaco is the little town of Ventimiglia ~ first village in Italy. Another quick explore casing the town so we'd have our bearings when we go back tomorrow for market day.... namely FRESH PASTA, cheeses, sauces, veggies etc. Unfortunately, it's a dirty little place but it's rich in history just like all the little towns. Archaeological Ventimiglia (east side of the modern town) dates back to Roman times. We'll check out the Medieval part of town and the Roman theatre (with the first level of steps still intact) tomorrow. Fingers crossed for a non-rainy day.

Our fun find while in Ventimiglia was Bar Gelateria tucked away on a back street. Illo welcomed us, insisted we sit down and enjoy Italy's best hot chocolate (no, make that the world's best hot chocolate... he said), a bowl of his own homemade gelato (he picked our three flavours, and power-packed, creamless coffee for me. It was one swallow ~ half a demitasse cup! Illo is a hoot; we loved him. He subjected us to several youtube clips of him making his gelato. He considers himself a gelato artist due to all the flavour combinations he makes up.

Julie, Between my own "festive" eating and just looking at all these food pics, I am spreading at the hips...lol I love how you are taking the time to enjoy the little remote places and ones found in back streets. A true tourist would never venture to places and miss out on meeting the Illo's of this world :)

Looks like a fun day. Are you doing lots of legging it around or is it mostly bus travel to and fro? Amy and I are pretty well packed and ready to go tomorrow....

@Jane, busing between the villages but legging it once we get there! Yesterday we walked 2 hours straight in the AM and 2 hours leisurely in the afternoon. Still, I'm not sure all my legging-it is compensating quick enough for my all I'm eating!!
@Faye, I'm really hoping that all the bites I pop in my mouth get worked off but I'm not entirely sure they are. That being said, I'm just getting ready to wrap my lips around fresh pasta and pesto from local market today back in Ventimiglia. Of course, we raced around looking for Illo and dashed in for 2 mugs of his wicked-good hot chocolate. He hugged us because we came back!
